Hustler wins the face

Bath moved ahead of the field in West Division 1 with a comfortable win over league rivals Bristol Bombers 2nds

Bristol, having despatched Bath 2nds in the Flags a fortnight before established themselves as the main obstacle to Bath’s first team drive to attempt another crack at the premiership. With that in mind the home team put out the strongest team available, which included new signing Alex Hustler, who quickly showed that at face, he is a force to be reckoned with.

If proof were needed, the first face was hardly contested, Hustler came up with the ball, moving forward, classic fast break formation by Bath, quick pass to Jason He, dump to Griffiths, shot, goal, all in under 30 seconds.

James Smith dodges

Bath’s domination at face, meant that Bristol had to rely on Bath’s mistakes in attack to get the ball; Bath obliged on numerous occasions, and if the squad wants to progress into higher competition these need to be less frequent.

The first quarter saw Bath move to a 3 goal lead with goals from Doug Mackay and Hustler from individual dodges and drives up front; before a neat fast break from the visitors put them on the score sheet. Bath finished the quarter on a high with a left post drive from Butler resulting in a well-placed shot and goal.

The second quarter saw a lot more pressure from Bristol, but the Bath defence, although at times a little disorganised, snuffed out all attempts on Ben Hopkins goal, the fast transition, and resulting fast breaks saw a brace of Bath goals, Craig Morey’s first (of 4) from a great feed by Jason He and a second solo effort from Butler. A comfortable 6:1 lead at half time, but not by any means out of Bristol’s reach.

Defence with Sam White

Bath started the third quarter shakily, Bristol had a prolonged period of attack and the home side, although knocking the ball down in defence could not get the ball up field. Captain Luke Wilmot decided to take matters into his own hands and went for the big blast shot from 5 yards inside the Bristol half. The “shot” lost some power due to a Bristol check, the resulting much lower speed of the ball completely fooled the Bristol keeper, and the ball dribbled along the floor and into the goal. Wilmot claims it was “placed” in the bottom corner, one for future debate…..

Bowen-Ashwin and Wilmot discuss the goal

Bath then went through a period of trying to lose the game, head checks by Josh Yeoman and Wilmot put the home side down to a four-man zone, Bristol capitalised with 2 goals and looked to be growing in confidence. Bath however regained their composure with Sam King blasting a goal after one of his custom runs from midfield, Morey added two either side of another goal by Hustler (identical to his first).  The score of 5:2 in the quarter flattered the home side somewhat as the visitors certainly had the lion’s share of possession.

Smith shoots

The last quarter became stretched, good saves from both keepers, end to end lacrosse with little result from either team, Morey scored his 4th from another excellent feed by Jason He and Bristol managed to convert just one of their several attempts on goal.

All in all, this was a confident display by Bath, there are areas to work on, but the squad is looking capable of at least challenging the East at the end of the season, more structure in the clear and better communications are key to future Bath success.
