Redlands remain champions

Wilts and Dorset Pop tournament 2016

The Redlands squad

Congratulations to Redlands Primary school Chippenham on winning the Wilts and Dorset Pop Lacrosse tournament 2016.

Redlands Primary School in Chippenham came into the tournament as the defending champions and had a point to prove. Their biggest rivals Stanton St Quintin, the 2013 winners were looking to upset the apple cart. The two schools met in the first game of the preliminary round, with Redlands stamping their authority on the proceedings with an emphatic 7:1 win.

While the other teams were beating each other (Brinkworth Earl Danby PS beat Stanton 4:1) Redlands PS continued to win their games, although not all as convincingly, St Mary’s CPS Weston held on for a while only to lose 5:2 and Downton PS Salisbury kept the score to 4:2

The placings of the Preliminary round were as follows

1st Redlands PS

2nd Stanton St Quintin PS

3rd Brinkworth Earl Danby PS

4th St Mary’s CPS Weston

5th Downton PS

6th Neston PS

The first Semi-final saw a much improved St Mary’s PS give Redlands a fright by scoring the first goal, but the Chippenham outfit rallied and came out winners 4:1 – not a bad result for St Mary’s in their first Pop tournament.

The second Semi-final was a much closer affair, with both teams locked on 2 goals each for a lot of the game, the winner for Stanton St Quintin PS came late on in the game and Brinkworth Earl Danby just didn’t have time to rally. After two years of being knocked out in the preliminary rounds this was an excellent day Brinkworth, they should be proud of their improvement.

The finalists

The final between old rivals Stanton and Redlands couldn’t have been more different from the opening game, Stanton had grown into the tournament and were up for the challenge, Redlands however, just had a little too much fire power and exploited some good long passing and catching to win 4:2  at the close

Redlands PS now go on to the National Pop Finals in Sheffield on the 26th of June 2016 to represent the region.

Well done and good luck

Thanks for the day go to Organisers Luke Wilmot and Nik Roberts, and of course Luke’s family (Mum, Granddad, Grandmother and Aunt) who kept the game times and scores, a real family outing.
