Firsts grind out win
Bath v Bristol Bombers 2nds
15thOctober 2011
Location Recreation Ground
Final Score Bath 17:5 Bristol Bombers 2nds
Saturday saw the seconds travel to Aberystwyth, while the first team played host to Bristol Bombers seconds, and Sunday saw the U16 team travel to London to compete in the Holder Trophy 6 a sides. Sadly the Ladies did not manage to field a squad to travel with the seconds to Aberystwyth, so the 50 seat coach had plenty of space for the 23 man squad.
Captain Will Finlayson could not have been a happy bunny during what could be considered one of the poorest bath performances for three quarters of the game.
Bristol are always organised at every level, technically sound and physical, not a team to underestimate. Despite a small squad the visiting team took an early two goal advantage, making stand in keeper Tony Ackers look ordinary to say the least, long range shots from a beginner player from the restraining line doing the damage. But hard work and the odd flash of quality meant Bath clawed their way back and into a two goal lead by the end of the first quarter.
Bristol however did not read the script and promptly won the second quarter to go into the half only one goal down. Despite an ordinary third quarter, littered with mistakes Bath managed to put some clear air between the two sides, allowing the home team to relax, plus the visitors were starting to pay the price for a small squad; which might have accounted for the fourth quarter when everything started to click, nine goals with no reply.
Another good performance from the King brothers, cementing their place in the first team; Sam King getting 5 points whilst younger brother Matt grabbed 6. Only Ken Murray with 7 points did better.
Quotes of the day
“I’m the second best player on this field” Tony Ackers to LDO Alex Caton...
“Is 23 (Will Finlayson) your LDO”? Bristol defender to Sam Scott the reply should have been: “No the LDO is the one with LDO written on his back”
