Peter Short can't believe itAt one stage it looked as if this game was doomed to be either conceded or moved to another date, the Bath Half Marathon uses the recreation ground and the University Pitch had been put out of action by the groundsman, with requests to the City council resulting in another blank Bath had to move the game to Trowbridge. Congratulations to Liam McDougal, Nik Roberts and Lloyd Butler for getting out early and marking the pitch, and a big thank you to Trowbridge Cricket club for allowing the use of the showers and providing the meals.

Tony Ackers makes a savePredictably the game was very tight, both defences being pretty strong, although Bristol took an early lead there was little joy for either team, Bath edged possession in the first half but could not convert some promising attacks, whereas Bristol, the far more organised squad capitalised on the few crumbs left out for them, going into the half 3:0 up.

The Third quarter was all Bristol, Bath’s defence worked overtime to keep the League leaders out, and were rightly disappointed when the attack squandered the few chances that came to them. The fourth quarter finally saw Bath come out with some fight, getting the goal via Lloyd Butler and looking to open the floodgates, however good saves by the Bristol keeper and an excellent fast break goal took all hopes away from the home side. Despite again looking the dominant team towards the end, Bath just couldn’t break throughPhil Walker defends.

In the end the better team won a competitive and well tempered game, Bristol are the “big Fish” in the West and are going from strength to strength, Bath must learn that team training and organisation eventually wins out over raw talent and know how.

“AAAAAAHHHHHH” The whole of the Bath bench and supporters after Bristol’s Guy Oldring yelled out in a high pitched voice “please stop hitting me” to Steve Mooney.

John Harrop – “A defence of Mooney, Bown and White...someone’s going to get bruised”
